Art therapists at OSH work as a part of patient- centered interdisciplinary teams that include psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, social workers, and other therapists. Based upon their clinical expiriences with patients, they provide input to the patients' recovery care plan. Art therapists create a safe, comfortable space for patients to come together and create art as a recovery tool. 

Art therapists effectivly support personal and relational treatment goals. Art therapy is used to improve cognitive and sensorimotor functions, foster self-esteem and self-awareness, cultivate emotional resilience, promote insight, enhance social skills reduce and resolve conflicts and distress. 

  • Job responsibilities: work directly with patients to assess individual patients and develop a treatment plan with the interdisciplinary team. Document and report patient progress toward treatment goals.

  • Possible work settings: Grief counseling, Education outreach – schools, Gallery settings, Hospitals, Halfway houses, Domestic violence and homeless shelters, Elder care, Correctional facilities, Private practice
